How FTTH changed our lifestyles
We live in Lake Michelle, Noordhoek, and for our first two years on the estate we had to make do with a very up-and-down ADSL service, and even when it was ‘up’, it was excruciatingly slow. This made working from home impossible as I never knew whether the Internet would be accessible or not.
Telkom laid fibre in the estate in 2014 and in April this year we signed up for a fibre package from RSAWEB. Two weeks later, Telkom technicians were at our home to set us up.
The difference is amazing. For a start, it’s fast! Our children don’t watch any TV programmes now but YouTube content instead (only for a limited time period a day of course!).
We’d previously downgraded our DSTV package to the bare minimum but now my husband and I don’t watch any traditional television at all. Instead we’ve signed up for Netflix (which has great content for kids too) and access our news online.
Secondly (and most importantly for me), it’s reliable – no longer do I have to resort to coffee-shop wi-fi in order to work, and if I have writing and research to do in the evening, I know that I’ll be able to get it done.
Internationally, this kind of fast and efficient connectivity is a given – but I’m still marvelling at how amazing it is!
