What is the difference between Fibre, LTE, ADSL & WiFi?

September 17, 2020

It’s safe to say that the internet has become an integral part of our lives. Most of us use it from the moment we wake up, and until we go to bed. We use it to work throughout the day, then again when we get home to listen to music while we wind down or cookFinally, we use it to stream series after we’ve eaten our dinner. We also use it to stay in touch with our friends and loved ones throughout the day. In the past decade, the internet has truly transformed from a want to a need.

With this said, if we do indeed use it every day – then we should know the difference between the different names, acronyms, and products available, shouldn’t we? So, without further ado, here’s RSAWEB’s go-to guide detailing the different terminology and types of connectivity you can get for your home.

WiFi

Let’s start with WiFi, a word we’re all surely aware of – but do we understand what WiFi is, what it stands for, and what purpose it serves?

WiFi is a wireless networking technology that is used to access the internet on a large array of devices like laptops, desktops PCs, tablets, smartphones, and other smart devices like TVs and watches. WiFi has no physical connection between the points it’s transmitting from and to. Insteadit uses receivers and radio waves to connect two seemingly unconnected points.

In a nutshell, it is a piece of hardware that allows us to connect our devices to our routers without having to use any cables or wires.

Fibre

Over the last few years, Fibre has been hailed as the new front-runner in the wide and wonderful world of connectivity – and for a very good reason!

Fibre optic internet is the fastest and most reliable connectivity solution that you can get for your home. By using Fibre optic cables to transmit data, Fibre connectivity is able to travel at the speed of light and isn’t affected by your distance from the source. In the past, Fibre has been regarded as an expensive alternative to ADSL connectivity which couldn’t be further from the truth. In actuality, Fibre has become even more affordable than ADSL and offers a wider variety of packages to suit the different needs and lifestyles of consumers.

Fixed LTE

Have you ever seen the words ‘LTE’ or ‘Fixed LTE’ online and wondered “What on earth is that?’’? Don’t worry, because the explanation is very simple – in a nutshell, LTE is mobile data, and the ‘Fixed’ part refers to the permanent location the data can be accessed from.

After Fibre, Fixed LTE is the fastest form of connectivity out there – reaching speeds of up to 150Mbps. It allows you to connect to the Internet via a mobile network and is ideal for households in areas where Fibre is not yet available. It’s also so simple to set up and hassle-free to connect to – all you need is a router and a SIM card – simply put the SIM in the router and turn it on. No installation, no problem!

ADSL

ADSL uses telephone lines to transmit data along copper cables from your nearest telephone exchange to your home or office. Once the most popular form of connectivity, as of 2020, Telkom have started removing all the copper line infrastructure that ADSL relies upon in order to operate. This means that very soon, ADSL connectivity will no longer be available to use.

Do you feel more informed? Like you could head out, order connectivity, and understand what it is you are purchasing or looking to purchase?
